Cannabis Public Health Concerns and Legal Implications

  • Session Number: S28-01
Thursday, March 11, 2021: 8:30 AM - 9:05 AM

Speaker(s)

Author
Erin Karschner
Armed Forces Medical Examiner System

Description

While cannabis remains a federally controlled Schedule I substance, medical and recreational cannabis legislation continues to expand throughout the United States. This decriminalization has significant implications from both a public health stance and from a legal perspective. With widespread use and greater variety of cannabis-containing products, emergency departments and poison control centers have seen increases in accidental toxic exposures. Additionally, ingestion of synthetic cannabinoids present in some vape oils and adulterated cannabidiol products may result in adverse effects. Along with toxicity, increased access to cannabis impacts many other facets of public health, including driving and workplace safety. Driving under the influence prevalence in legal cannabis states and the lack of a consensus per se THC limit will be discussed, as well as the challenges cannabis legalization poses to pre-employment and random drug testing programs.
